Anyone who's been reading CL for a  while is familiar with the stellar photography of Todd Bates. You can see some outstanding examples of his work in our story this week on designer Michael Vollbracht.

But now he's done something I didn't think could ever be done:

He's made me miss the St. Pete Pier.

In his new time-lapse video showing the gradual destruction of this controversial landmark as shadows fall and clouds fly by, the footage is suffused with an air of melancholy that's almost romantic.

Bates shot 3,960 50mp images over four months to compile the video. He recommends you watch with the HD setting on. Or, "better yet," he says on his Facebook page, "if you've got a 4K display or Retina display, select 2160p."

The piano accompaniment, which he found free on YouTube, is particularly well-chosen; he liked it for its "funereal quality."

Even if you aren't in mourning for the downfall of the pyramid, this video might just make you sigh a little at its passing.
