Tracy takes on stand up

ComedyThursday, April 19

Tracy Morgan is hot right now. He went from seven years as a cast member of Saturday Night Live — a sketch comedy show — to 30 Rock, a laugh-track free, Golden Globe-winning sitcom based on the behind-the-scenes workings of a sketch comedy show. Though it may not seem like much of a stretch, Morgan brings his own original brand of outrageous absurdity to his role as a mental case comedy star with questionable talents. Look him up on YouTube and you'll find clips from the show in addition to plenty of other classic Morgan moments, including "Tracy Morgan Wasted on Live TV," where a generic El Paso daytime talk show interview escalates to full-scale chaos, with Morgan slapping his stomach and calling it a mating call, then removing his shirt entirely and dancing around to the beat of audible backstage laughter from the show's producers. This wasn't someone who was wasted — this was a shrewd comic trying to make the most of a three-minute segment advertising his stand-up show later that night. He brings the funny to Tampa Improv this weekend. April 19-22, 8 p.m. Thurs., 8 and 10:30 p.m. Fri., 7:30 and 10 p.m. Sat., 7 p.m. Sun., The Tampa Improv, 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Centro Ybor, Ybor City, $20, 813-864-4000, tampaimprov.com.
