Ultra of the East

Music Saturday, November 24

John Santoro (former owner of the now-defunct Amphitheater) returns to Vinoy Park with his second annual day-long outdoor electronica festival. Last year, we saw the likes of Rabbit in the Moon, Baby Anne and Darude; for Sunset '07, Santoro has upped the ante with headlining acts The Crystal Method and BT. The Crystal Method came out of the early '90s Los Angeles rave scene and are frequently hailed as the Chemical Brothers of the U.S., both for their status as an electronica duo and because of their penchant for incorporating rock, hip-hop and soul into their fiery brand of electronically-generated, sample-packed dance music. Composer/electronica artist BT (aka Brian Transeau, or the "Father of Trance") stopped here several months ago on his tour with Thomas Dolby and his ambient electronica was accompanied by digital visuals like those featured on his 2006 CD/DVD 5.1 surround sound release, This Binary Universe. More than 20 other DJs provide support on the festival's two stages. Sat., Nov. 24, noon-10 p.m., Bayshore Drive and Seventh Ave. N.E., St. Petersburg, $45 in advance/$50 day of/$120 V.I.P., sunset07.com. An after-party with a special appearance by The Crystal Method is held from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. at Jackson's Bistro, 601 S. Harbour Island Blvd., Suite 100, Tampa ($15 general/$25 V.I.P.).
