Around the middle of the month I see Cupid walking past my apartment and I run outside to fuck some shit up. The cops get called, I go to jail, and February 15th, I wake up alone and as unromantic as ever.
I have no romance to celebrate this year. I dont even have a crush on anyone. As I resign myself to a life of solitude, I present to you my list of the 10 most heartbreaking songs ever, just in time for that sucks-if-youre-single holiday. You will notice all of my songs are performed by females. Ive always questioned the emotional sincerity of men – perhaps thats why Ive always been able to relate most to the words of female songwriters (or words as delivered by female singers). These are the ones who sang me to sleep when I felt the most empty.
1) Station, Jill Jones
Once Princes bra-wearing backup singer, Jill Jones re-emerged in 2000 with probably the darkest and saddest album Id ever heard, Two. I never expected this '80s pop girl to deliver such shadowy depth and cavernous emptiness in her new music. Station opens the album with a buzz, then a bang. When Jill sings, Said youd never leave me … said youd never leave me, the unmasked bleeding from her voice is chilling and real. I was so shaken by this song (and the whole album) that I called into work for two days and listened to it over and over while I cried on my bed.
