Wal-Mart coming to Seminole Heights?

Last year, the neighborhood was up in arms over a Family Dollar. Wait until they get a load of this …

On Facebook, one local resident named Ingrid Jacoba wrote that such a bigbox would "darken" the area, adding, "How will our Seminole Heights Walmart compare to this one over in the Kenwood neighborhood in St. Pete? Will we get the utilitarian box or something with a little architectural design embellishment so it doesn't look like "anywhere, USA"?

Kimberly Overman wrote, "I dislike Walmart because of the employment policies, but they will hire people and they are responsible property managers. We could do worse and have worse businesses that we keep in business as they are still around when so many others have failed."

The reader who informed CL of the news worries that "Walmart could change the whole character of the neighborhood ... what if other big box stores come nearby? I think it will be bad overall for the area."

No doubt, in the near future, there will be more opinions expressed in public forums.

The Official Unofficial Seminole Heights Blog reported that Wal-Mart plans to build a new store in Seminole Heights.

CL learned about the plan after business hours, so we were unable to confirm the fact with City of Tampa officials.

The blogger wrote that the retail giant has purchased the property at 1720 E. Hillsborough Ave., which previously housed an auto dealer.

Assuming the report is accurate, we're curious to take the temperature of the neighborhood about this new store.

Last summer, many neighbors reacted negatively to the announcement of a Family Dollar Store that would be constructed on Florida Avenue. Their complaints ultimately went for naught as the store is scheduled to open later this year.
