We don't have to tell you how important water is to our continued existence on Earth, right? This past April marked the commencement of the United Nations' Water for Life Decade, a program that encourages efforts to fulfill international commitments made on water and water-related issues from 2005 to 2015.

In response, Brooker Creek Preserve hosts World Rivers Day Fest, an event that highlights the area's many waterways while emphasizing the continued importance of keeping these waterways healthy and clean.

The Brooker Creek staff offers the public a chance to check out a variety of family-friendly activities and diversions, including water-friendly practices and product demonstrations; lectures by a handful of guest speakers; live music; interactive exhibits; a visual art display by wildlife artist Ernest Simmons; food and refreshments; and a kids' corner with stories, games, crafts and more. The first 200 attendees receive a free care package.

World Rivers Day Fest, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Fri., Sept. 16. Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs, 727-453-6800. For more information on the U.N.'s Water for Life Decade, visit www.un.org/waterforlifedecade.
