Shortly after word that George Zimmerman was to begin auctioning off the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin in 2012 spread (and before bidding opened), the notorious firearm was nowhere to be found.

The auction site through which Zimmerman was trying to sell it offered a statement on why it doesn't approve of the weapon being sold there.

In short:

"We want no part in the listing on our web site or in any of the publicity it is receiving," the statement reads.

The Orlando Sentinel is now reporting that Zimmerman is now trying to sell the gun through unitedgungroup.com. He claimed that the original gun auction site was not equipped to handle the site traffic or the onslaught of publicity.

On Wednesday evening, Zimmerman told several Orlando-area news stations of his plan to sell the gun on the site gunbroker.com with the starting bid set at $5,000.

According to Politico, he referred to the gun as "a piece of American History."

For a second, we wondered if the pun was intended, or if the whole thing was a joke. Probably not.

It's unclear whether the piece has any bidders yet, due to the new auction website being unresponsive.
