In this set of rarely-seen silent films about feminist protest, slapstick rebellion, and suggestive gender play, women organize labor strikes, bake (and weaponize) inedible desserts, explode out of chimneys, electrocute the police force, and assume a range of identities that gleefully dismantle traditional gender norms and sexual constraints. This screening includes new scores for silent films performed live by Eckerd College student musicians and an introduction and discussion afterward with Cinema’s First Nasty Women DVD set programmer Laura Horak (Associate Professor of Film Studies at Carleton University). Veteran stage, film, and television actress Chryssie Whitehead (Chicago, A Chorus Line, West Side Story film, Radio City Rockettes) performs an autobiographical play with music unraveling her diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder at the age of 38 while making peace with the tragic passing of her mother. Joining on the stage is co-performer & music supervisor, Nick Wilders. The show concludes in a talkback with Chryssie and the audience, and moderated by a mental health professional in a safe, affirming space, supporting the show’s mission to normalize conversations around mental health. The Smithsonian’s "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America" is an immersive and thought-provoking exploration of the evolution of democracy in the United States, relevant to people of all ages. The Museum was selected by Florida Humanities to host the exhibition as part of the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street project.
