Mad Decent Records’ Kandy comes to this Carrollwood club as one of the few gay men in the mainstream EDM scene. “I stopped making music for like a year straight to find myself and just enjoy [the New York drag] scene,” Kandy said about a new video, “Feelin' KNT,” which found the Long Island native coming out to the world just after coming out to his family, “and that’s kind of where it all came from. ✔️ Summer of Soul: O Som Do Jazz w/Francisco de Lima It took him six years of practicing, but after picking up the trombone at 10 years old, Francisco de Lima finally went pro at the age of 16. The Grammy-nominated valve-trombonist who founded Brazilian big band Banda Mantiqueira is much older now, and he arrives at Palladium’s Summer of Soul series to support his latest album, Suingue Brasileiro, in which he interprets works by Djavan, João Bosco, Moacir Santos and others, presenting a unique blend of Brazilian ginga (swing) and American jazz. A regular of festivals around the globe plus Carnegie Hall in New York City, de Lima’s work with Banda Mantiqueira is a touchstone for all Brazilian artists. For this appearance at Palladium Theater’s Side Door Cabaret, de Lima will be backed by O Som Do Jazz, which features Brazilian singer Andrea Moraes Manson and a crew of experienced musicians including trombonist David Mason and drummer Mark Feinman, who is a member of St. Petersburg’s La Lucha (whose new album CL is streaming a week early via cltampa.com/music). Rock The Park w/The Boats/Photo Fire/Serendipity Downtown Tampa’s long-running, no-cover, family and pet-friendly outdoor music series eases into the fall with this show featuring a pair of rock bands including The Boats from St. Petersburg, who spent 10 years creating music before disbanding in the mid-2000s. The quintet’s new album (Single Cell Biography) was released in July, and finds The Boats floating into familiar, anthemic, alt-tock territory.
