Best theater humanitarian

Garry Allan Breul

Twelve years ago, Breul founded the Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project to raise funds for cash-strapped HIV/AIDS charities. He co-writes plays and directs fun, whirlwind productions and typically raises $2,000-$3,000 in one night. For this year’s Prelude to Pride production, a fundraiser for Metro Charities, he parodied a Bette Davis classic with All About Steve, starring Matthew McGee, Scott Daniel, Eric Davis and other local greats. What made this year’s production special is that Breul persevered with the project despite his own illness — in April, he was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer. But you wouldn’t know it by his spirit, hard work and infectious positivity.
