Here, My Dear
MARVIN GAYE
Motown

This double LP (single CD) is most famous for being part of Marvin's divorce settlement with Anna Gordy, but it's also one of the most naked musical statements in pop annals. The songs chronicle a crumbling relationship, and are full of bitterness, regret, guilt, doubt, finger-pointing and self-recrimination. Gaye sings these missives with raw conviction, and builds some smoothly funky rhythm tracks (to go along with some great ballads). Here, My Dear is uneven and entirely self-indulgent, but I find it quite listenable, and most of all, riveting. ES
