Long May You Run by the Stills-Young Band



Take half of CSNY — the half that butted heads most often — and throw them into the '70s hit-making Criteria Studios in Miami seven years after Woodstock and you get an interesting artifact that is little known by even the most ardent Neil Young and Stephen Stills fans. Sure, Stills' songs are pretty uninspired, but Young more than makes up for it with two of his best, the title track and the "Cortez"-ian ode to the rock-star life at the hotel "Fountainbleu." The subjects here may be mostly tropical ("Black Coral," "Ocean Girl") but the instrumentation is vintage CSNY, with Young's grungy guitar set off against Still's slinky lead playing, with washes of Hammond organ throughout — but without the annoying high harmonies of frequent colleague Graham Nash.
