✔️ Trend Decay No. 1: Permanent Makeup w/Clang!/Ekumen/Perse Microgroove owner Keith Ulrey is out of town thanks to a tour with Mineral, but he’s letting Permanent Makeup (a punk band that’s released records on Ulrey’s New Granada Records) play in the space and kick off its own mini-Southeastern tour while he’s away. Bay area rock-scene agitator Clang! (touring with Permanent Makeup) plays a support set along with a new band, Perse, but all of it is happening in honor of weirdo New Orleans hardcore group Ekumen, which is playing in support of a forthcoming self-titled LP that won’t see release until February 1. Floating Roots Fest w/Ari Chi/King Complex/HeyeYella/Mwiza Simfukwe/Wallysburg/Annona/Tyler Costanzo It’s always great to see new Bay area music blogs pop up, and this show at St. Petersburg DIY space Paper Crane is the first festival pieced together by Floating Roots, which was founded in the second half of 2018. A pair of CL’s favorite songwriters (Mwiza Simfukwe, Ari Chi) are on the bill, but so is an exciting new St. Petersburg rapper HeyeYella and a handful of local rock acts, like masked blues-rock outfit King Complex. ✔️ Tinsley Ellis w/Davis Coen Rolling Stone said that Tinsley Ellis’ licks rival those of Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, and for the last three decades, the 61-year-old Georgia guitarist has been nurturing his obsession with British blues bands by marrying it to an affection for Memphis R&B, southwest blues and urban funk. Tinsley plays in support of his 2018 album, Winning Hand, at this Skipper’s gig where Memphis bluesman Davis Coen plays songs from his first ever spirituals-based LP, These Things Shall Pass. ✔️ Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe w/Stanton Moore/Kenneth Crouch Karl Denson calls his job with the Rolling Stones a“side gig,” and we totally believe him (the 62-year-old songwriter replaced his hero, Bobby Keyes, on saxophone in 2014). For the last two decades, Denson has been expanding fans’ worlds via his Tiny Universe project, and on Saturday he brings some of his Greyboy Allstars bandmates to Orpheum in support of a forthcoming Tiny Universe album, Gnomes & Badgers.
