Word must’ve spread about the ’Burg’s quaint yet culturally happening downtown, ’cause over the past several months an impressive range of national-scale talent has landed at venues here. In addition to its noteworthy 30-day run (see next page), State Theatre featured concerts by soul songstress Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings as joined by Valerie June and psych rock guru Roky Erickson with Austin upstarts The Black Angels, while Mahaffey Theater hosted a seething rock show by Queens of the Stone Age and a more contemplative affair by Morrissey. Jannus boasted ever-eclectic offerings with sets by Arctic Monkeys, 2 Chainz, moe., Umphrey’s McGee, and Old Crow Medicine Show, while Palladium Theater delivered the class via Robyn Hitchcock and India.Arie. Even the Trop got in on the action, bringing Weezer to its Post-Rays Concert Series stage. We can’t wait to see what the next year has in store.
