On this date in 1974, blues/rock singer Bonnie Raitt played two shows at the Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Opening the shows were relative newcomers Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. In the audience was rock critic John Landau from the Boston alternative weekly publication, The Real Paper. It was after witnessing one of these performances that Landau committed the now famous quote to print: “I saw rock and roll’s future, and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” Springsteen's record label used that quote to help promote his then current second album and Landau eventually came on board as Bruce's manager and co-produced his landmark album Born To Run the following year.
