Four of Tampa Bay’s highest-regarded artistic institutions are teaming up for the second time to create a strictly local exhibition titled SKYWAY 2020: A Contemporary Collaboration. There’s an open call for artists only residing in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Manatee, and Sarasota counties.

The museums participating are the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa.

The deadline for submissions is September 3, 2019, and the selected artists for 2020’s installation will be showcased in 1 of the 4 participating institutions from May 30-October 11, 2020.

According to the Museum of Fine Arts, curators of SKYWAY 2020 are looking for “artists working in diverse media and disciplines, including socially engaged art and participatory projects, are encouraged to submit original artworks and project proposals.”

During the first installation of Skyway in 2017, which didn’t include the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, curators received over 300 submissions but only showcased 57 artists. For SKYWAY 2020, museum curators will be joined by guest juror, Claire Tancons, to decide which artists will make the cut.

SKYWAY 2020 will not only a showcase of the quality and diversity of Tampa Bay area artists, but a create collaboration between curators of the four museums, to create a single, synergetic exhibit that reflects the region.

“This is an opportunity to focus on and celebrate Tampa Bay-area artists in an unprecedented way. It’s important to us as curators to provide context for the diverse work being made in our region,” said Katherine Pill, Curator of Contemporary Art for the MFA said in 2017 about the first Skyway exhibit.
