✔️ Chronixx Six months after his performance at downtown Tampa’s Gasparilla Music Festival, 24-year-old rising reggae star Jamar McNaughton (aka Chronixx) returns to the Bay area for a headlining set at Orpheum in Ybor City. It’s in support of a new LP, Chronology, which re-introduced his self-proclaimed “black experimental music” to a new legion of fans bound to grow endeared to McNaughton’s jazz, soul, funk and hip-hop aesthetic. Chronixx’s pops (Chronicle) was popular in the early ‘90s, and the youngster’s Spanish Town-flavored music has never shied away from mixing messages about social injustice into material that’s earned him a racially diverse, open-minded fan base. ✔️ Nas w/Wale/Nick Grant Fans disappointed in Nas’s short April 2015 set at Club Skye in Ybor City (or the clusterfuck that was the HIT Music Festival) can probably count on this St. Pete show to be a little more Illmatic, and while you still probably won’t hear all of Nas Escobar’s classic 1994 album, the man born Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones has been on a high lately thanks to a co-headlining tour with Lauryn Hill (Hill won’t be at this show, meaning it has a much better chance of being on time). A recent performance in Jersey found Nasty Nas outshining the legendary Lauryn every step of the way, and that bodes well for for this one where DC rapper Wale (a bona fide star in his own right) opens the show alongside “Bouncin’” singer Nick Grant. Arkaik w/Alterbeast/Inanimate Existence/more Thrashing, almost-mathematical death metal (“tech-death” for those of you obsessed with genrefication) from the Golden State comes to in Ybor City when Arkaik arrives to correct a slight stumble (2015’s Lucid Dawn LP) by giving fans a taste of its forthcoming effort (Nemethia, set for release on September 29). POSTPONED: Latimore w/John Capouya John Capouya’s book on ‘50s-era wrestler Curious George has a strange Bob Dylan twist in it, but the University of Tampa professor (whose byline also appears in Newsweek and the New York Times) completely dives into music on one of 2017’s best Florida-flavored books, Florida Soul: From Ray Charles to KC and the Sunshine Band, in which a scholarly tale of the Sunshine State’s contributions to soul and R&B gets told within 348 insightful, entertaining pages of interviews and stories that don’t shy away from the racial issues of the day (black artists were forced to play on the Chitlin’ Circuit since so many venues had not yet integrated, in case you forgot). Tennessee-born R&B star Latimore (who wears a Tampa Bay Buccaneers sweater while being interviewed by Capouya at home in Riverview) will also be at this event to show off the Miami-made disco and soul that made him famous in the 1970s.
