The Coathangers w/Plastic Pinks/Piss Ghost Teenage fans of The Coathangers are in for a treat on Friday, but only if they’re enrolled in Jim Chambers’ Music Box Academy. The Atlanta based Suicide Squeeze signees are slated to play a show at New World Brewery after the sun goes down, but the girls — Crook Kid, Minnie and Rusty (all with the surname “Coathanger”) — will also be in Carrollwood of all places for a closed to the public, hour long “Chatterbox” session that’ll be split 50/50 between Q&A and performance time. At first glance, the suburbs might be a weird place for the grungy, irreverent sounds of the rowdy garage rockers, but the Box is kind of an incubator for kids who just don’t quite fit the mold for most middle schoolers. The New World show — where St. Pete’s Piss Ghost and Miami’s Plastic Pinks open — is 18 & up, so don’t be surprised if the Music Box gig is chock full of youngsters looking wide eyed at what the future could be. The Florida Orchestra: The Music of David Bowie The Florida Orchestra’s busy season shoots for the stars at this tribute to the Starman where they’ll be joined by a full rock band and vocalist so that we can all pay respect to the man who gave the world “China Girl,” “Heroes” and “Space Oddity.” (Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg) INFO
String Noise String Noise have a lot of shows in the area, but the NYC-based violin duo will shine at this one where they’re set to play the soundtrack of Penelope Spheeris’s 1979 film “The Decline of Western Civilization.” If the BONK music festival rings a bell to you, then definitely look here for a full preview of this show. Arlo Guthrie Willie Nelson is cancelling shows because of illness, and while Arlo isn’t old by any means (69 is the magic number, you know), it still wouldn’t hurt to check in with the guy who wrote the most magnificent Thanksgiving roots rock opus ever (“Alice's Restaurant Massacree” for the uninitiated). Woody’s oldest son isn’t really touching “Alice” on this tour, but he will lean really hard on cuts from the late ‘60s/early ‘70s portion of his discography (Arlo, Running Down The Road and Washington County to be specific) in the hopes of helping fans remember what it was like to come of age in one of the strangest eras this country has ever seen. Stonegrey CD Release Yes, they do covers really well, but don’t write off Land O Lakes four-piece Stonegrey, who are some of the better musicians on that side of Thonotosassa. Seriously, these guys can play and they’ll have a flock of loyal fans at the casino to help them celebrate release of Voice of Reason, their second album of radio ready hard rock. (Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tampa) INFO
Jay Day: J Dilla Tribute w/DJ Cub Ask any beat fanatic, and they’ll tell you that J Dilla was a man the hip-hop world lost too soon. His work, however, will truly live on forever thanks to countless up and coming producers who’ll forever be chasing Dilla’s innovative, one of a kind sound for generations to come. If you like the fact that Common, the Pharcyde, Kanye West and even Pharrell exist in today’s rap ecosystem, then you’ve got Jay Dilla to thank. Free doughnuts will be provided in honor of Dilla’s 2006 LP, Donuts, which was mostly put together in his hospital bed and released just days before he passed away from complications related to thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. The Avett Brothers The Avett Brothers have almost a dozen albums plus thousands upon thousands of miles traveled stuffed into their musical suitcases, so it’ll be interesting to watch how they stretch the experience into an ambitious “evening with” arena show at the University of South Florida. Expect the Grammy-nominated Americana outfit to do just fine, however, and keep an eye on brothers Scott and Seth Avett who’ll carry the load with their trademark melodies and harmonies. Their 2016 album, True Sadness, has grown less sullen over the last few months, but the rest of their output (especially 2007’s Emotionalism) still retains a charming sense of melancholy which very very few acts have been able to replicate since the band broke onto the scene with A Carolina Jubilee over a decade ago. 97X Presents Ferg's Friday Night Live Local Band Spotlight w/Rancid Polecats/Car Bomb Driver Ferg’s taps into the local scene by asking a two decades long running Tampa punk act (Rancid Polecats) to share the stage (in the case of Ferg’s Live it’s a shipping container) with another long running band (Car Bomb Driver) who share the same appreciation for bands like the Sex Pistols, Beatles, Stones, Journey and even Camper Van Beethoven. (Ferg's Live, Tampa) INFO
Code Orange w/Youth Code/Nicole Dollanganger Code Orange stand apart from the rest of the metalcore world, and a new album — this year’s Forever, released two weeks ago on Roadrunner Records — further cements that. It is 35 minutes of brutal, absolutely beautiful post-hardcore that both pays tribute to the genre while also advancing its evolution in a way only Code Orange (formerly Code Orange Kids) could pull off. The band’s oldest fans may feel alienated by the band’s molting sound, but the Philadelphia based unit is bringing a normally exotic sub genre of hard rock to the masses on this one.
