Sarasota Music Festival Artist Showcase 2 w/Jeffery Kahane/Robert Levin/Alexander Kerr/more Sarasota’s ongoing celebration of classical music continues this weekend as various members of the local musical community plus out of towners like Los Angeles conductor and pianist Jeffrey Kahane work through selections from Schubert, Brahms, Mozart and more. Halo Circus w/Ruby Rose Fox Critics seem to be enamored with, Halo Circus. Don’t recognize the name? That’s not entirely unwarranted. A former American Idol finalist, lead singer Allison Iraheta’s career has seen its fair share of up and downs. After the 25-year-old won over viewers with her charm and gritty rock vocal, her solo career as a pop rock star quickly flatlined, culminating with her record label Jive dropping her in 2011. In 2012, things changed when she met guitarist and Duran Duran collaborator Matthew Hager. The two would go on to form Halo Circus and release a debut album, Bunny, in 2016. Despite being adorned by critics, the album has only garnered them moderate national attention. Described as “criminally underrated” by Rolling Stone, the two will be performing a more stripped down set for the Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing. Protester w/Give/Unified Right/Barrage/Drug Washington D.C. was almost like a birthplace for hardcore, so it’s cool to see a new band from the area — Protester — bring a brand new LP (Hide From Reality, released in March) to our neck of the woods to satiate the thirst of fans looking for classic straight edge hardcore that doesn’t necessarily worship at the altar of Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today and Unashamed. Tunnelvision: The Musical Tim Cain’s rock musical rolls on, and early reviews suggest that the Boy’s Entrance frontman’s play about sexual obsession, all set in 1980s San Francisco is definitely worth checking out. (Studio@620, St. Petersburg) INFO
Shrek the Musical It’s about 20 miles from Lutz’s Dreamhouse Theatre to playhouses like the Straz Center, so this is a nice alternative for families who’d like to take their kids to downtown Tampa for a show, but simply don’t have the ability to do so (those little creatures are impatient sometimes, huh?). Once again, this isn’t exactly live music, but singing along to Shrek jams is always a good time. I wonder if they have beer at Dreamhouse. (Dreamhouse Theatre, Lutz) INFO
