People were still using dial-up internet in 2004 when Justin Timberlake instigated a split-second wardrobe malfunction that put a serious dent in Janet Jackson’s career. Seriously, AOL sponsored the Super Bowl halftime show that year, and Jackson’s videos were blacklisted from Viacom properties including CBS and MTV, which produced the ill-fated performance. Ten years later, FCC chairman Michael Powell admitted that the committee acted “unfairly” toward Janet Jackson following the incident, but the damage had been done. The 52-year-old pop icon is still giving it her all and staging meaningful shows (last weekend she opened an NYC festival set with a nearly 30-year-old b-side, “The Skin Game (Part 1)”), so we’re excited to see Jackson and fans together again at what could be one of the summer’s best shows.
