Charlie Puth, OhGR and more lead Tampa Bay’s Friday live music lineup

Metal, pop, hip-hop and more to kick off the holiday weekend.

✔️ = Critic's Pick

✔️ Charlie Puth w/Hailee Steinfeld In world of mostly vanilla male pop stars, Charlie Puth stands out thanks to the pure joy he brings to the stage and songs like his latest single, “The Way I Am,” which earned the 26-year-old Jersey boy his highest chart debut to date (it entered the Billboard200 at No. 4 this summer). Voicenotes, the album from which the song emerged, has been a surprise guilty pleasure for critics, including one at the New York Times who called the 13-track effort “one of the year’s best pop albums.” Los Angeles singer Hailee Steinfeld — whom many fans will recognize from her Academy Award-nominated performance as Mattie Ross in 2010’s True Grit — opens the show. ✔️ Leviathan Cross EP Release Show w/Hollow Leg/Weltesser/Wrested Your critical reading skills are intact. This is, in fact, a show suited for fans of occult heavy metal influenced by bands like Black Sabbath, Red Fang, Royal Thunder, Hark and Graveyard. Leviathan Cross celebrates the release of its All Is Dust EP and invites some of Florida’s heaviest (Jacksonville doom-metal outfit Hollow Leg, St. Petersburg sludge band Weltesser and Tampa Bay post-rockers Wrested) to open the show. ✔️ OhGr w/Lead Into Gold/Omniflux Industrial music fans are going to have a field day on Friday when OhGr — a synthpop and hip-hop-influenced band featuring Nivek Ogre and Mark Walk of industrial legends Skinny Puppy — headlines an evening where longtime Ministry member Paul Barker brings his Lead Into Gold project to open the show. Both groups are supporting new albums, and Los Angeles experimental-pop composer Mahsa Zargaran (aka Omniflux) kicks all of it off. (Orpheum, Ybor City) INFO

Labor Day Live w/Shaun Frank/3LAU/Nicky Romero/Quix/Borgeous/Grandtheft/Henry Fong/Prince Fox/Quix/Riggi and Piros/Sultan + Shepard/SNBRN/Ku/more The clubby thumps start this Friday on Clearwater Beach thanks to this first night of Shephard’s annual Labor Day weekend bacchanal. Canadian DJ Shaun Frank plays Friday while Vegas’ 3lau (pronounced “Blau”) and Dutch producer Nicky Romero (birth name Nick Rotteveel van Gotum) play on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, alongside nearly a dozen other names. (Shephard’s Beach Resort, Clearwater Beach) INFO

✔️ Mike Mass and New Mutiny Mike Mass has a lot of music cooking these days, and this band featuring vocalist Ned Pope, keyboardist Julian Carrington, drummer Kenosobi, singer Victoria Diaonne and more is one of the most refreshing projects on his plate. The hip-hop band with a penchant for dipping into jazz and rock arrangements plays a late-night (10 p.m.) set at Ella’s. No cover, but bring money for food and drink. (Ella’s Americana Folk Art Cafe, Tampa) INFO

Sing-Along: Yellow Submarine So two sing-along screenings of The Greatest Showman sell out well in advance while this one featuring The Beatles’ 1968 animated classic still has tickets available? Didn’t know that Tampa Bay was a town of Blue Meanies. (Tampa Theatre, Tampa) INFO

Seshollowaterboyz Four underground rappers — Bones, Xavier Wulf, Chris Travis and Eddy Baker — come together under the Seshollowaterboyz banner, which should please fans of another pretty-much-disbanded hip-hop group, Raider Klan, of which Wulf, Travis and Baker were a part.
