Continuing Bethany Sherwin’s roundup of local beer store selection, we present Total Wine on Dale Mabry:
This location has the Dogfish Head seasonal and rarity motherload — Palo Santo Marron, Raison D’Extra, Red & White, Fort, Chicory Stout, Aprihop, World Wide Stout, and multiple cases of 120 Minute IPA priced at only $8.99 a bottle. For an intensely complex (and strong) potion, mix equal parts World Wide Stout and 120 Minute and then call a friend to help you drink it. The blend is called a Heaven & Hell, and word around the campfire is that Dogfish Head might produce wood aged batches of this diametrically opposed potion, as they did with Johnny Cask 75 Minute IPA, a barrel conditioned fusion of 60 and 90 Minute IPAs.
Available in singles or six packs, there’s just about every beer from California’s North Coast Brewing — Scrimshaw Pilsner, Reudrich’s Red Seal Ale, Pranqster, Old Stock, Brother Thelonious, Old #38 Stout, Old Plowshare, Old Rasputin, Blue Star, ACME Pale Ale, and ACME IPA, featuring label art by Alberto Vargas (as in Vargas pinup girls).
You can also stock up on the Demon Series from Avery Brewing — Samael, Mesistopheles, and The Beast — or Ellie’s Brown Ale, a magnificent English style brew, named in honor of Adam Avery’s Chocolate Lab. Less than $8 will buy a bomber of the Colorado brewery’s Maharaja Imperial IPA, Ale to the Chief, 15 Anniversary Ale, or Collaboration not Litigation, the outcome of a joint endeavor with Russian River brewing, who totally owns the Double IPA game with their enormous yet drinkable Pliny the Younger.
Although there weren’t many perennial beers from Left Hand Brewing, I spotted bottles of Rye Bock for $12.49, Twin Sisters Double IPA for $8.99, and Warrior Wet-hopped IPA for $5.99.
Almost the entire Flying Dog line is on hand, including the lesser carried Double Dog Double Pale Ale, Horn Dog Barleywine-style Ale, and Road Dog Porter.
There were also quite a few choices from Bell’s Brewery out of Kalamazoo, Michigan — singles and six packs of Hopslam, Double Cream Stout, Java Stout, and Expedition Stout.
Great deals on massive beers were everywhere — $6.99 bombers of Stone Old Guardian Barleywine, Brooklyn Brewery’s Monster Barleywine or Black Chocolate Stout 6 packs for $10.99, and the Rogue XS Series — $15.99 will buy a 26 ounce ceramic jug of Mori Moto Imperial Pilsner, Imperial Red Ale, Imperial Stout, or Old Crustacean Barleywine.
Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine singles are marked at $1.79 and $7.99 buys a six pack of the newly released Torpedo, the brewery’s first year round IPA, hopped with whole-cone Magnum, Crystal, and Citra varieties.
From Terrapin, you can get Dos Cocoas Porter for $10.99 or Wake-n-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout singles for $2.99. For alternate coffee brews, try $1.70 singles of Lakefront Fuel Cafe Stout or Lagunitas Cappucino Stout bombers for $3.99.
There’s a nice selection of reasonably priced Trappist ales; in addition to the Chimay trio, the full Koningshoeven line is available in 12 or 25 ounces, and large bottles of Westmalle Double and Tripel are marked $9.99.
The delectable Scottish and Wee Heavy Ales from Orkney Brewing are there too — Skullsplitter, Red MacGregor, Dark Island, and Dragonhead Stout. Also from Scotland, House Ale and Jacobite Ale from Traquair House Brewery, both priced at $5.49
There are full rows of Nøgne Ø Pale, Brown, and Porter as well as Chocolate Indulgence Stout and Bier de Mars from Brewery Ommegang. For $7.99, you can pick from among the 750 ml bottles of DeProef Andelot Cuvee Mystique, Euphorique, and Angelique. From Russia, there’s Baltika #4 Original Dark, #6 Porter, and #9 Extra Strong. Or if you’re in the mood for something French Canadian and of the Belgian Style, try Quatre-Centième Brassin Commémoratif or La Seigneuriale from Unibroue.
With less than $4, you can buy an Austrian Castle Eggenberg Doppelbock Dunkel or Urbock Dunkel Eisbock, Lion Stout or Lion Imperial Lager from Sri Lanka, or Tusker lager from Kenya.
I also found a wide variety of affordably priced lambics and other fruit beers, like singles of Steigl Radler with Lemonade and Abita Strawberry Lager, a malt beverage brewed with real Louisiana strawberries.
Just in time for boating/ beach/ baseball season, 12 ounce cans of Newcastle Brown Ale are priced at $6.99 a 6 pack. There are also 6 packs of Wittekerke cans, one of my personal Rays tailgating necessities.
