As a follow-up to last week’s cocktail-in-a-jar, our new drink of the week spotlights an even quicker way to alter the flavors that await in your glass. We’re not exactly gonna play by the “rules,” but you already knew that.

Floral Elixir Co. is fueling the floral nerd in me — and On the Sauce, which has featured everything from elderflower to hibiscus in cocktail recipes, several times over, for the past few years. Based in Cleveland, the nearly decade-old producer of potent floral syrups has developed a number of elixirs infused with different flowers and botanicals, and they make upgrading an average sipper into a more memorable creation a breeze.

Now, previous installments of On the Sauce have shown you how to fashion similar syrups in your own kitchen, but there is something to be said for having an arsenal of drink enhancers that’re conveniently ready to go. That’s why, when I got my hands on Floral Elixir’s 2-ounce bottles of flavor bombs to test out, it wasn’t a matter of if, but which.

The syrups are sold individually as well as in five-bottle cocktail kits, depending on your intended use. You can choose from kits like Champagne Lovers, The Tiki Lounge, Whiskey Lovers and Tipsy Lemonades, to name a few. For our purposes, however, each elixir, no matter the kit it’s packaged in, is easily interchangeable (and will be used for a bevy of future drinks, I’m sure — stay tuned).

I think the ideal customer for Floral Elixir, whose products are available online through its website or Amazon, is that person who enjoys entertaining. You can use a base cocktail — say, a G&T — and switch up its flavor profile to keep your guests guessing all night long. The kits would also make a great gift for any home bartenders who might have a birthday coming up (*cough* me *cough*).

So what’re we whipping up? Guava, a fine choice as we begin to transition from spring to summer, pairs amazingly with Floral Elixir’s lavender syrup. Rum screams summertime to me, too, as does citrus. I went back and forth on whether to use lemon or grapefruit, though I eventually landed on the latter. If you’re not a fan of grapefruit, don’t hesitate to go with the equally tasty lemon.

This week’s cocktail — You Down with LGG?, aka lavender, guava and grapefruit — is perfect for those many warmer days ahead. It’s refreshing and drinkable without being overly strong. I downed three while experimenting and didn’t get tired of the flavors. Not even a little.

You Down with LGG?

Makes 1

1 1/2 ounces white rum

1 1/2 ounces fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice

1 1/2 ounces guava juice (store-bought is fine... this time)

3/4 ounce Floral Elixir Co. Lavender Elixir

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously until well-chilled. Fill a rocks glass with ice and strain in your cocktail. Garnish with a grapefruit or lemon wheel.
