Held in April and sponsored by Hillsborough Community College, the annual Ybor Festival of the Moving Image is rightfully billed first and foremost as a film event, though artistic director David Audet doesnt let the confines of genre bind him. The four-day fest is also a magnet for fans of performance art and experimental sound. This year, in addition to the hard-to-find docs, shorts and independent features that graced screens at the Cuban Club and Silver Meteor Gallery, highlights included New York performance artist Pat Oleszko, a festival regular who regaled folks with dancing cigars and a postmodern portrayal of a cigar-factory lector, and Miami-based experimental composer Gustavo Matamoros, who lit up the El Pasaje arcade with a live remix of found sounds against a video backdrop of a giant, burning cigar. What will they think of next year?
