The theme "new" brought some interesting tales out of the woodwork at True Stories, a monthly, themed storytelling show where people get up and tell true personal stories. Here's one from Lindsay Dixon, who told a story about a taking a vacation where she tried something new -- putting down her phone. It's the rare kind of event where people don't pull out their own phones because they're too busy just being at the event, listening. But that's what happens at True Stories, so it's no wonder this was a crowd favorite. Have a listen to Dixon's story, told March 8 at St. Pete's Iberian Rooster.
\\<\/iframe\>Each month there's a curated story, and next up is Frank Wells. Other than that, no one knows what's going to happen, because everyone in the audience can put their name in the hat (they call it the "fuckit bucket"), for the chance to get up on stage and tell a story. The April theme will be "goodbyes," and if you're called you get five minutes to tell your own real-life story. No props. No notes. Then the audience picks the “best” story of the night, but the host is know for encouraging cheating by bringing all your friends to vote. Random prizes are awarded, sometimes books, sometimes t-shirts.
Admission is free. For a list of upcoming themes and information on becoming a featured storyteller, check out the True Stories website.
True Stories is a Keep St. Pete Lit event, brought to you by Creative Loafing and the host and show founder, Lisa L. Kirchner. Trish Collins watches the clock with her faithful ukulele, and Paul Palumbo gets the video.
