Angered, like many, by the governor-blessed FDOT plan for the Tampa Bay Express’s “Lexus lanes” expansion of I-275 running roughshod through Tampa communities, artists Michelle Sawyer and Anthony Krol have created a stunning collage of historic imagery that calls attention to a vital community in the path of destruction: Tampa Heights. The proposed plan includes the demolition of the building that houses Cafe Hey and Oceanic. In response, the duo has painted a mural on the café’s southern wall and curated an art show inside that reminds us of the entrepreneurial spirit that created Tampa Heights and sparked growth in the city. “This mural is not only about the work of entrepreneurs in building industry,” writes the duo on their website, “but also the workers that kept the those industries going. It’s about what made Tampa, community and interconnectedness.” Learn more about the project and donate to it at tampaheightsmural.com.
