Devendra Banhart w/H.Hawkline Venezuelan-American songwriter Devendra Banhart makes a much anticipated appearance at St. Petersburg’s State Theatre where he’ll support a 2016 LP of freaky folk music, Ape in Pink Marble. The 35 year old dips his toes into pop on the release “Fancy Man,” but really hits home on the exotic “Theme for a Taiwanese Woman in Lime Green” where synths and latin guitar lines come together in on the album’s atmospheric highlight. Banhart has been really pissed off about the country’s political situation lately, so don’t be surprised if you hear a little soapboxing after Welsh singer-songwriter H. Hawkline opens the show in support of his own “pink” album, 2015’s In the Pink of Condition. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg) INFO
Lucinda Williams w/Buick 6 You can poke fun at “Passionate Kisses” all you want, but Lucinda Williams is rocking that Grammy winning hit all the way to the bank. The 64 year old songwriter is still touring behind her two disc 2016 release The Ghosts of Highway 20, but she’s enjoyed some new shine lately thanks to Charles Lloyd & the Marvels who tapped Williams to play on their version of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War.” (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) INFO
WIPA Live! w/Mike Mass/Hagan Lee/Mighty Jai St. Pete emcee Hagan Lee has been staying busy since CL profiled him in December, and it looks like the 33 year old is finally getting to bring some peers from the 813 to his neck of the woods. It’s all thanks to the ongoing WIPA Live! Series that is 100 percent committed to showing the Bay area that the downtown St. Pete green space can be a world class music venue. February 23-27, Posi Music Festival Oh boy. If you’ve ever wondered how much namaste you can namastand, then you should check out the Posi Music Festival which culls together five days of workshops and concerts all aimed at helping attendees bring more positive energy to their communities. If you just want a taste, then maybe sneak into the Marriot late night on Friday when the Posi Music Fest stages its signature event — an acoustic pajama jam that takes over different themed hotel rooms from 10 p.m. to midnight. (Tampa Marriott Westshore, Tampa) INFO
Jazz in the Attic w/Kayla Ember Band The new guys on Eighth Avenue have a big week in Ybor planned (read about their private shows with 311 and Rebelution in a new issue of Creative Loafing Tampa), but they’re opting for a different speed on Thursday when they welcome songwriter Kayla Ember (who has performed for Michelle Obama) to their new listening room for a night of jazz, soul and R&B. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City) INFO
The Clinic w/Suburbia There will be a Theremin, contrabass, auto harp and kazoo onstage together when experimental jazz quartet The Clinic takes the stage at Springs Theatre on Thursday. While that image may be funny to imagine, what’s no joke is how hard everyone at the oft-forgotten recording studio works day in and out and they quietly keep music coming in and out of Tampa’s blighted Sulphur Springs neighborhood. Donations are accepted at this show. (Springs Theatre Arts & Recording, Tampa) INFO
Funken Treasure w/DJ Blenda Watagwan on Thursday night? Ask Blenda. The longtime Tampa DJ and Gwan Massive's commander of the wheels of steel takes to the seas for what he calls an "I-riginal" (referring to the irie vibe, we're sure) soul bash at Seminole Heights hipster haven Mermaid Tavern. Not everyone wants to be in a large concert venue all the time, and this monthly is an excuse to throw back a few pints while taking a trip back in time with old-school soul, funk R&B and reggae delivered exclusively on vinyl all night long.
