According to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, Gasparilla season will start as soon as we enter the new year. While other cities watch a disco ball drop at their New Year’s celebration, Tampa will watch a pirate’s treasure chest instead.
A 320-foot-tall treasure chest will be 3-D projected in Curtis Hixon Park for a city-wide New Year’s celebration, and will “drop” after the countdown to midnight. Curtis Hixon Park will be riddled with food trucks and family-friendly activities, as the crowd gathers to watch the very first booty drop, which will be accompanied by “some pyrotechnic features.”
New Yarrgh’s Eve Booty Drop, yes that’s the official name, was announced earlier today by Castor, using the hashtag #NYEBOOTYDROP to promote the celebration on social media. It’s the newest Tampa tradition yet, and will occur annually on New Year’s Eve.
The first annual New Yarrgh’s Eve Booty Drop will start at 9 p.m. on December 31, at 600 N Ashley Dr in Downtown Tampa.
