Best Up-and-Coming Theater

The Heather

Tucked away in a drab plaza on W. Hillsborough Ave. and surrounded by office spaces, the seams of The Heather are bursting with a certain magic. The 35-seat non-profit theater company, named after late local actress Heather Philipsen, produces three to four full-length plays and sketch comedy shows a year, donating a percentage of sales and donations to a local charity related to the subject matter of the plays. Despite the limited space, the theater’s productions (including this year’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea and My Children! My Africa!) make a big impact. There is an unmistakable energy inside The Heather, spearheaded by founder and beloved star-shaper, Kathryn Laughlin.
