Here are three Bay area hip-hop shows that’ll give you a taste of the Bay area’s best (Rod Wave), its up-and-comers (a showcase at Brix Lounge) and some of the touring acts that hit Tampa (Roddy Ricch). Read more below.
Rod Wave St. Petersburg native Rod Wave has been slowly making a name for himself on a national level after conquering the Tampa Bay area. The 19-year-old’s 2018 mixtape, The Hunger Games 3, is a grab bag of soulful beats and solid rhymes that are equal parts Florida sun and streets. The combo gives Rod Wave — who’s been watching his stock rise after an interview in XXL magazine — an edge rarely seen in hip-hop, and it's led to a deal with Alamo Records and the recent release of his newest album, PTSD. Sat., June 29, 10 p.m. $25 & up. Whiskey North, Tampa. seetickets.us. —Brian Furman

Xtra w/B Popes/Nico Sweet/B Popes/Sean Elliot/Bird Beezy/Brickz Corleon/Trag Black/Psych Montano/more Hip-hop comes to Dale Mabry Highway on Saturday when The Brix Lounge hosts a new, monthly series, Wave Theory, where a pair of familiar names (Nico Sweet and B Popes) join two handfuls of Bay area lyricists we hope to see more of as the year unfolds. Sat., June 29, 10 p.m. $5. The Brix Lounge and Social Club, Tampa. INFO.
Roddy Ricch If you didn’t see Roddy Rich kick off Sunday’s star-studded BET Awards tribute to Nipsey Hustle, then do the next best thing and see the 20-year-old Compton, CA native in real life when he plays this Carrollwood area nightclub. Mr. Ricch’s new single, “Out Tha Mud,” ended up being just as good as an Instagram snippet suggested it would be, and we can’t get the flute samples and catchy melody out of our heads. Ricch was involved in two car accidents in the week leading up to his BET appearance, so expect him to be pretty glad to be on stage on Wednesday. Wed., July 3, 10 p.m. $25 & up. Whiskey North, Tampa. eventbrite.com.
