In case you missed it, the big news for Tampa Bay’s Record Store Day is the rebirth of Daddy Kool Records, which finally fell victim to rising rents on the formerly undesirable 600 Block. The shop — which had a presence in downtown St. Petersburg for the better part of three decades — is reopening its new digs in the Warehouse Arts District (2430 Terminal Dr. S.) on Saturday.
“We are very fortunate to have landed where we did,” store manager Manny Kool told CL when asked about the shop’s new home. “The owners of the building support the arts [and] are community focused.”
Daddy Kool’s move, combined with the closure of live music venue Fubar, means that the 600 Block has officially gone silent until State Theatre completes an ongoing renovation, but Kool and his staff have moved on and will celebrate Record Store Day 2019 by teaming up with Reverb LP to stash a holy grail album in its dollar bin.
“It is a classic. Probably the definitive album from this artist,” Kool told CL. “It is also a very high audio fidelity pressing. I would have priced it at $99 in our used section.”
Daddy Kool will also welcome Bad Suns for a meet-and-greet ahead of the rising Los Angeles rock band’s show at Jannus Live, and tap some of CL’s favorite locals — including Broom Closet, They Hate Change and The Venus — to play music.
Daddy Kool isn’t the only Bay area record store throwing down for the annual retail holiday either. Kingfish, Microgroove, Mojo Book & Records and Planet Retro Records have all tapped handfuls of local favorites to play in-store concerts, but Bananas reached deep to also score a set from revered New Orleans songwriter Mary Gauthier, who’ll play Bananas’ 22nd Avenue location at 2 p.m. (click here to read our interview with Gauthier, who headlines The Attic in Ybor City later that night).

Mojo Books & Records Most Bay area record stores order limited edition RSD titles, but Mojo literally orders pretty much everything in large quantities. The shop will have a $1 vinyl sidewalk sale with more than 2,500 titles. First 10 people in line get a free Mojo T-shirt and drink of choice from the coffee bar. Free PBR while supplies last, a vegan bake sale to benefit homeless animals and food from Uncle Mince's World Famous Seitan. Bananas Records This St. Pete staple’s 22nd Avenue location will have free beer from Bill Kiefel, raffles and foos from Taste of Gourmet Cafe.
