ZooTampa added another member to their white rhino crash this week.
According to a post on the zoo’s Facebook account, experienced white rhino mom, Kidogo, gave birth to a yet-to-be-named female calf Thursday, Jan. 16. The calf is the seventh white rhino born at the zoo as part of their Species Survival Plan.
Visitors can see the baby and Kidogo from the tram ride in the Africa section of the zoo.
Southern white rhinos recovered from near extinction in the early 1900s, when there were only 50-100 found in the wild. Today, 17,212 and 18,915 can be found in South Africa.
The Species Survival Plan is an effort made by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums and ZooTampa to save endangered species. Last year, a koala was born on-site, as well as a litter of red wolf puppies.
