Late Tampa Bay saxophonist Max Pierre was like family to fans at Tampa Bay Rays and Lightning games and beloved by night owls in Ybor City, too. Now members of Pierre’s family — including Pierre’s mother and nephew — will fly in from Ohio to visit with Max’s friends and fans.
The trip to Florida is built around the Rays’ March 31 game against the Houston Astros where the team will stage a moment of silence during the scoreboard pregame video that honors members of the Rays “family” that have passed away over the past year.
“There will be at least the two of us,” Max’s nephew, Dennis Pierre, told CL. “Possibly up to six of us.”
Max — who could be seen busking at sporting events and on Seventh Avenue — had a stroke on December 27, 2018 and passed away at the age of 60 on January 5. He was also the subject of a unintentional death hoax in August 2016.
Dennis told CL that he and Max’s family would be out and about in Ybor City on March 30 and may also visit Ferg’s in St. Petersburg at some point during their visit.
“Nothing too major,” Dennis said. “Just planning to spend some time with the Tampa community that embraced our beloved Max.”
