Taking on a third wheel

Film/FundraiserSaturday, April 21

Friends of the Festival — the nonprofit that produces the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival — continues its Monthly Film Series with a screening of the Italian drama Riparo (Shelter). In the midst of returning to Italy from a holiday abroad, Anna and her lover Mara discover that they've inadvertently acquired a passenger, Anis, a young Moroccan immigrant who stowed away in their ferry-traveling car. Anna, the breadwinner and more softhearted of the couple, takes pity on him and invites him to come live with them against Mara's wishes. Anna gets Anis a job at her family's shoe factory — where Mara already puts in time as an assembly line worker — and as he gradually eases into their domestic routine, the trio establish an unusual, emotionally precarious family unit. 'Course, being precarious, the harmony is short-lived and the storyline takes a turn after Anis loses his job and falls for Mara. Proceeds raised from this screening benefit Friends of the Festival, which donates one dollar per paid admission to HIV-awareness organization, Dining Out For Life. Sat., April 21, 8 p.m., Muvico Baywalk Theater, 151 Second Ave. N., downtown St. Petersburg, $9 adults/$7 students, 813-879-4220, tiglff.com.
