RedFeather w/Victims of Circumstance/Adam Randall/Harpers Ferry He's one of the two skins-battering beat-keepers in heavy post-rock foursome set and setting. More recently, Mark Etherington has also been working on material with RedFeather, an alt folk and groove oriented rock quartet that he co-fronts on acoustic guitar and husky haunting vocals with mood-setting keys and synths mistress Jaqlyn Troubadour, whose sweeter-toned calls act as a bright feminine counterpoint to his more masculine timbre. Also of note: punk-ska purveyors Victims of Circumstance, a five-piece from Clearwater with a two-horn punch and a third LP, Akupuncture, that was issued last fall via drummer Glenn Stewart’s Financial Records imprint. Matt Gerhardt and Undertow w/Khora/Roots For Change Gerhardt, the clear-toned, high-note hitting singer and guitarist of Sarasota reggae rock outfit Undertow, celebrates his birthday with a concert featuring Largo's Khora, an alt-rock four-piece with a mild island vibe, and Roots for Change from St. Petersburg, which brings swaying trumpet-fused dub into the mix. Woolly Bushmen I got to witness Orlando trio Woolly Bushmen tear up New World during their Tropical Heatwave set of raucous and vintage fuzzy garagabilly-blues, lead guy Simon Palombi a dynamic presence with sweat-dripping mutton chops, a passionate gruff-shout delivery and skills on both organ and guitar. Bassist Jacob Miller brings backup vocals and lowend support while brother drummer Julian Palombi holds down the rhythm end of things. Show up to Ella’s early and make it a proper weekend kick-off with a fatty Angus burger or gourmet pizza (The Hog is highly recommended) to get you primed for their 10 p.m. set. Homegrown Hiphop 4 w/FLA ALL DAY/Hagan Lee/The Rukus/Waystid Talent/Infinite Skillz & Jake Jansen/Headnokka/SamSoul A St. Pete tradition that began in 2009, B.A.S.E. Inc. Music's Homegrown Hip Hop returns for a fourth annual installment with an all-star lineup of local talent performing the so-called "Hip Hop Co-Op," among them, B.A.S.E. dual rhyme-slingers Infinite Skillz and Jake Jansen, Tarpons Springs anti-commercial trio FLA ALL DAY, St. Pete rapper and crooner SamSoul, and The Rukus, the two-flow attack of emcees KeithElite and Rude laid down against the consummate spinning and scratching of DJ Blenda. 3rd Stone w/Heights Ns/The Produkt Young music prodigy Anthony Kavouklis picked up guitar at age 5, started 3rd Stone at 10 after an impromptu performance with blues legend Buddy Guy, and is still the reputable Gainesville outfit's instrumental pilot on keys and synths in addition to electric and acoustic guitars, with Jose "Big Za" Rosado adding vocals, percussion and lyrics to their potent positive-vibing mix of funk, jazz, soul, hip hop, Afrobeat, reggae and rock. Also of note: Odessa-based Heights NS, who sings and rhymes against hard grooving rock-heavy hip hop in the vein of N.E.R.D., with live drumming by Jim Chambers. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)
Marianne Flemming and Maggie Council As Hideaway Café & Recording Studio winds down its too-short tenure as a public listening room to focus primarily on studio and video production, two smart guitar-wielding songstresses who toured together before they both became moms take the intimate stage. Florida-born, Washington-based Flemming returns to town for the first time in many years to play a jazz-imbued acoustic set with Tampa's earthy progressive blues-tinged roots-folk mistress, Council. Resinated Album Release Party w/Burning Tree/Paint The Town Red/Danfield Resinated lays down rocking and rollicking reggae rock jams on a firm backbone of funk, and this party celebrates the official completion of a full-length album’s worth of it, BEyourself. A trio of solid like acts support. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)
Capitalist Kids w/Teenage Softies/Warrior Bros/Dave Decker Don’t know about much about the underground Ybor Heights landing spot otherwise known as Basement House, but its tenants have apparently been living the DIY ethos since ’08, and have been known to host rehearsals, parties and the odd house show, like this Sunday’s bill featuring Austin pop-punk outfit Capitalist Kids. Bobbalobba Dingdong w/Highway 301/The Outpatients/The Applebutter Express/DMZ/The Funky Seeds/Uncle Johns Band with Steve Connelly Billed as "A celebration of everything that is Bob Edwards," this charity fundraiser helps Ramblegrass guitar player, picker and singer Edwards defray medical costs not covered by insurance. Grateful Dead tributeers Uncle John's Band are joined by practiced axeman Steve Connolly and several other funk, rock and Americana-jamming bands fill out the rest of the day’s live music offerings. The Semis w/Sons of Young/Blast and the Detergents Put your dirty dank dance shoes on for a night of shit-kicking, beer-swigging, ball-busting rock ’n’ roll. The night opens with the ear-bruising and battering punk rock tendencies of Blast and the Detergents, followed by jerky-hiccup alt-rock crash and tumble of four-piece Sons of Young, from Columbia, S.C. The night culminates in a set by the Billy Summer-led St. Pete purveyors of surf-beach melodies and high-powered garage marked by plenty of reverb and distortion, The Semis. The band has just issued a new five-song EP, Burn Your Eyes Like the Sun (or so I assume it's called since there's not an actual title), and will likely have some copies on hand at the show. Tee-shirts, too. They make a fine quality product. (Fubar, St. Petersburg)
