District 2: Doug Rivero
St. Pete College professor Dr. Doug Rivero is an environmentalist with an educational background in environmental science and political science. Rivero is running on a strong environmental justice platform, with plans to promote environmental sustainability and address the stain of environmental racism—a concept that’s used to explain the disproportionate ways in which people of color are affected by environmental injustices. Opponent Karen Jaroch, has gained national recognition as a conservative Tea Party “activist” who has advocated against sustainable development in the past. Rivero offers a much more comprehensive platform than his other two opponents—Mike Harvey and Erik Challenger—and would have a wealth of expertise to lend in this unpaid role serving the county’s Soil & Water Commission.
District 4: Sonja Brookins
Dr. Brookins is running on a compelling platform that prioritizes environmental justice, and achieving as much by, in part, addressing the disproportionate impact that environmental injustices have on marginalized populations. Brookins’ priorities include ensuring access to safe, clean water for all; supporting local growth and agriculture; and developing eco-friendly solutions that promote social and economic welfare as well as protect natural resources. Brookins has a robust vision for the county, and possesses a wide range of skills from her personal and professional background in healthcare, community advocacy, management, and education. She would bring a valuable skill-set to the Hillsborough Soil and Water Commission.
