Centre Gallery opens Art Breaking the Silence, a collaborative exhibition that features (according to the press release) "Queer works by Queer artists depicting Queer subject matter." For the exhibit, curator Kris-Derek Hechevarria uses "queer" as a reclaimed word to represents anyone who does not conform to hetero-normative society, including pro-gay allies. The exhibit is held in conjunction with the April 18 Day of Silence, an annual nationwide, student-organized protest against the harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students during which participants take a day-long vow of silence to symbolically represent the silencing of LGBT students and their rights. April 16-27, Centre Gallery, USF-Tampa Marshall Center, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa, free admission, 813-974-5464.
