The Blotter

The Brake-Up: A Sarasota couple had been living together for seven months. The man reported that his girlfriend was possibly cheating on him. He was concerned because she wanted to leave with her children in a car with bad brakes. He added that he didn't care that she was leaving, but he didn't want her taking that vehicle. The girlfriend called her father to pick her up.

He Said, He Said: Two transients were in a fight. One claimed that the other man attacked him in a parking lot on his way to work and stole his bicycle and backpack. When questioned, the other man reported that he was actually the guy who'd been attacked — the complainant had attacked him and accused him of killing his wife. However, police noted that he had the complainant's backpack and pajamas. Since both men had cuts on them, police could not determine an aggressor.

Key Questions: A woman reported a suspicious incident at a Tamiami Trail hotel in Sarasota. An unknown male knocked on the door to her room. She opened the door, and the man told her that he was the hotel owner. Then he grabbed her room key and ran away. The hotel emergency line advised her to call the police, so she did. The woman was not staying at the hotel room and told the police that she was going home. It is unclear from the report whether anyone was staying in that room or why she had the key.

Slumber Party: A Pattison Avenue resident returned from work to find two people asleep inside his house. He had known both individuals for a long time, but there was confusion as to whether or not they had been invited to stay there. According to the report, he "decided to give them the benefit of the doubt" by requesting a trespass warning from his home and his property. The nature of their history remains undisclosed.

Sidewalk Sale: A case of "illegal dumping" occurred on Dr. Martin Luther King Way in Sarasota. A man reported that a crew, working for the landlord of the apartments across the street, dumped the contents of an apartment onto the street in front of his house. The dumped items included a television, some furniture, old propane tanks, and a variety of miscellaneous household items. Police were unable to contact the supervising landlord at that time.
