There are two key words to keep in mind when you’re bidding in Creative Loafing’s annual holiday auction for the benefit of The Children’s Home.
Here’s one:
Children.
Right now, with the world in turmoil, we are confronted with non-stop images of war and terrorism, and of desperate families’ flight from both. Most indelibly, we see the faces of children — children caught in something they cannot understand, who know only this: They have lost their homes.
The Children’s Home is giving children in Tampa Bay a chance to find what their counterparts in other parts of the world can only dream of: a safe, permanent home with a family who loves them. The Home’s programs don’t stop with the children; they also reach out to grandparents raising grandchildren, to parents who need counseling to be better parents, to families who want to stay together but need help to do so.
So there’s the other key word: Home. When you bid on something tasty or elegant or otherwise enviable in this year’s auction — something perhaps that you’ll share with friends or family when you go home for the holidays — remember that with every successful bid you’re helping to ensure a happier home for a child. It’s a little thing, but it mounts up; CL has raised tens of thousands of dollars for The Children’s Home over the years, and this year we hope to raise more than ever.
You can bid online on eBay, where our auctions live; each auction is 10 days in duration. Watch for more info in print each week between now and Dec. 20.
Sometimes we’ve used that old saw ironically: “It’s for the children.”
But at heart, this auction is for the children. And today that’s more important than ever.
