Dancing in the Sand

Only in Florida can you spend Memorial Day weekend camping with hundreds of strangers on an uninhabited island while enjoying live music and filling your belly with food and booze. In its fifth year, Live On the Bay 2006 returns to the appropriately named Beer Can Island for four days of just that. Like past years, thousands of people will descend on the island (only accessible by boat) to listen to rock bands and techno DJs. Unlike past years, organizer Jurgen Wochnik has added activities such as a Survivor-like treasure hunt and beach volleyball tournament. A $15 wristband gets you onto the island and free draft beer from noon 'til 8 p.m. Attendees also have the chance to win $10,000 in prizes, including a 19-foot boat and a brand-new kitchen. Boat-less partygoers can catch a ride to the event via one of several aqua-shuttles that leave from Apollo Beach throughout the weekend. Proceeds benefit the Tampa-based Child Protection Education of America. Fri.-Mon., May 26-29 (begins at 10 a.m. daily), Super Test ("Beer Can") Island, 813-784-4549, www.liveonthebay.org.
