Tonight in live music; Destroyer Fest kickoff, Halfnoise, Brother Cephus, Bangarang, more

Pre-parties, after parties, and that nonsense in between, too.

Halfnoise w/Brother Cephus Life can be depressing, and Halfnoise know the feeling. Their new single is all kinds of heartbreak and rejection, but the tune itself if an unabashed indie-pop dance party. Tampa’s own Brother Cephus haven’t been releasing music as frequently as our 2015 profile of them would have suggested, but brothers Gabe and Seth Davis have been exceptionally busy as evidenced by a batch of moody, rollicking demos we previewed last week. Keep your fingers crossed for BroCephus to share a whole lot of that new stuff at this gig. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) INFO

Bangarang w/Mike Mass/Vern Sr./Tony Hands/Hagan Lee/Beyo Two Best of the Bay winners (Bangarang and Mike Mass) lead a lineup featuring some of Tampa’s best emcees who’ll take over Ella’s for a late night set in the unlikeliest of venues. (Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café, Tampa) INFO

Great American Pops: From Fiedler to Williams Bob Bernhardt conducts and Andrew Staupe mans the piano as Arthur Fiedler’s greatest hits (a la Gershwin, J.P. Sousa and Leroy Anderson) get performed along with selections from famed movie score composer John Williams (the orchestra is doing stuff from Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Tampa’s Straz Center get’s the weekend’s first performance again, but the Mahaffey Theater in St. Pete and Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall will get their piece, too. Details at floridaorchestra.org. Et Cultura: Festival of Creative Culture w/The Hip Abduction/Luxury Mane/The Jackettes/Hot Jam Factory/Funny Bunny/Tides of Man/more Technically, this four day multi-disciplinary festival kicked off on Wednesday, but there is still plenty of celebrating to go around as the ambitious agenda shines light on artists, makers, technology, and film. The music portion kicks into high gear on Friday when world-pop outfit The Hip Abduction play a hometown set at the corner of Baum Avenue and Ninth Street in downtown St. Pete. Saturday’s sounds will cover everything from hip hop (The Real Clash, Gat & Cris), alt-pop (GreyMarket) plus rock and soul (Luxury Mane, The Jackettes) before Funny Bunny highlight a Sunday lineup that includes Nashville rockers Future Thieves and Tampa indie outfit Tides of Man. Side stages featuring folk music will provide a quiet foil to the joyous noise, and more information is available at elcultura.com. Read our profile of Funny Bunny’s Aaron Lepley, whose soundtrack work will be featured during El Cultura’s Southern Exposure film segment. (Green Bench Brewing Co., St. Petersburg) INFO

Destroyer Fest After Parties The impetus for Destroyer Fest was founder Lucy Volpe’s desire to make sure unheralded Florida metal bands ended up with a good gig that could give them national exposure (read our story here), and while her two-night showcase will take over Central, she and St. Pete longboard shaper Breezy Boards are amplifying the love by showcasing even more bands with late night sets at Emerald Bar. Stoner-sludge outfits Crud (Miami) and Junior Bruce (DeLand) play Saturday, but a pair of Gainesville doom metal collectives (Thunderclap and Gaul) will kick it all off on Friday. (Emerald Bar, St. Petersburg) INFO

The Plymouth Rock Show w/Drastic Fall/Polar Summer/Almondy Brown And the award for earliest Thanksgiving rock show pun goes to this bill featuring Bay area bands that blur the lines between metal, funk and hard rock. Nice one, guys. (State Theatre, St. Petersburg) INFO
