The female-fronted quartet Brazilian Girls, with its sexy, eclectic, multilingual funk/samba/jazz sound, rose out of New York's increasingly world-beat-conscious post-jazz scene to attain international buzzdom a couple of years ago. When the group came to the State Theatre last year, many wondered what kind of vibe the show would adopt. A throbbing, sensual mini-Carnaval? A Medeski, Martin & Wood-esque jam? A druggy, hedonistic dance-club celebration of the beat? What we got was a little bit of everything, a stylish, multi-culti groove-party that perplexed those steadied for something else, but handsomely rewarded the open-minded. Look for this gig at Tamiami to deliver something similarly exciting, but hopefully with an even more immediate small-room sense of being in the moment.
