HCC-Ybor Art Gallery's latest exhibition, Jopek—Midulla—Piazza, showcases the talents of three contemporary mixed-media artists who are all Bay area residents.
Tyler Jopek is an art student whose work focuses on the deconstruction and reconstruction of concepts, identity, and a union of confrontational and conciliatory philosophies. He uses simple lines to produce portraits of seemingly self-conscious figures and arbitrary icons set amongst complex lines and negative space.
Tracy Midulla, an Atlanta College of Art and Florida State University graduate as well as full-time HCC faculty member, explores fundamentally connected themes, objects and narratives. Her self-portraits and anonymous landscapes offer a visualization of the subconscious with a recurring concept of duality.
USF graduate and Gulf Coast Museum of Art curator Kurt Piazza uses photography and video to investigate architectural space, voyeurism and psychological impulses. His recent works on paper involve arbitrary points randomly connected to create intricate compositions of line, color and gesture; and organic forms and lines in space that convey a sense of movement and emotion.
An opening reception takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Thurs., May 18.
Jopek—Midulla—Piazza is on display through June 2, at HCC-Ybor, Palm Avenue and 14th Street, Ybor City. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon., Wed. and Thurs., and noon-8 p.m. Tues.; admission is free. For more information, call 813-253-7674.
