Adventures in Weekending: Read No More, Randy Wayne White + Zombies with Nerf guns

Remember when we didn't need a cell phone? Yeah, me neither.

It's all gone to shit since Jobs died.

You win, technology. Is that what you wanted to hear?

This has not been my week. I could bore you with stories of phone batteries and nonfunctioning phones and the backordered 6s, but in reality I'm boring myself with my rage at this point, so instead, I acquiesce. Technology: 1; Salustri, 0.

I have to write this quick, because the way things have progressed this week, I expect the computer to self-destruct in about 10 minutes. Before it does, let's destroy this weekend.

Friday

All weekend — and through next week — Nightmare on Franklin Street brings you terror and terrifying films.

Also all weekend, Wordier Than Thou's Read No More returns for a second year of scary stories brought to life in one of Gulfport's coolest houses.

Also also all weekend, check out Vault of Souls. Stop whimpering about the price and do it; it's totally worth it. We swear.

Saturday

I'll be the first one to tell you I don't think the native plant people are right. When it comes down to it, we're all exotic invasives. Nevertheless, the folks at Wilcox won my heart long ago, when we ripped out our lawn. The Fall Native Plant Festival at Wilcox comes with the Native Plant Society, yes, but it also comes with some great xeric plants and advice, so, you know, smile and nod when they tell you your particular plant isn't "native", then go ask Wilcox staff for advice.

What happens when you give a zombie a Nerf? Amazing, funny, terrifying things, but fear not — you get a Nerf gun, too, at the Zombie Nerf War.

Who wants to eat some pig and do a jig? Well, then, you may want to head to Pig Jig on the River. And when you're done, we have another question for you...Who wants pie? I do. You do, too. Admit it. And then go get it at the Pie Festival in Largo.

6th Annual Witch's Pumpkinfest has pumpkin beers and jack-o-lanterns. We call that a party...

Sunday

Randy Wayne White will speak at Four Green Fields. You need a ticket, but you get a book. He's fantastic and I love him and I'll be there... will you?

In light of this week's news — and in absence of a public apology — I'm having a hard time telling you to get your brunch on at what I typically call my favorite haunt. I'm thinking of stopping by 400 Beach as I understand they have AYCE crab legs. You'll find me waddling away from the crab leg station... I'll be the one without a working cell phone.
