The Church of Scientology raised a few eyebrows when it announced it would be conducting and filming a mock FBI raid in downtown Clearwater on Monday, but then the "production" either didn't happen or happened at a location different than the one announced. Now why would an organization with a well-documented history of paranoia, persecution complex and "the best defense is a good offense"-style tactics want realistic footage of a law-enforcement agency swarming one of its properties? The mind, it boggles.
The former proprietor of long-embattled Pinellas avian rescue operation Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary won't say how more than a million dollars in BP Deepwater Horizon settlement money awarded to the charity was spent. The sanctuary has been a trouble magnet for years, and the former proprietor was reportedly forced out by his sons in 2016 before it rebranded as Seaside Seabird Sanctuary. Not great news for Seaside, which is trying to to separate itself from the issues of its former incarnation and, we assume, probably could've used a properly allocated $1.2 million.
And finally, St. Pete police charged a guy with robbing 12 homes by breaking into them while they were being tented for termites. The cops say the dude didn't wear any kind of gas mask or anything to protect himself from the poisonous gas fumes, but didn't get any super-powers from breathing it — like maybe the super-intelligence to decide to wear some kind of gas mask to protect himself from the poisonous gas fumes.
