Pentatonix w/Echosmith You know what’s ambitious? A capella in a 20,000-seat amphitheatre. The culprit with that kind of audacity? Pentatonix, an Arlington, Texas outfit built around three high school friends — Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado and Mitch Grassi — who decided to audition for the third season of the NBC show The Sing-Off before eventually winning the top prize of $200,000 and a deal with Epic Records. The label would drop the group before Pentatonix eventually released its debut PTX, Vols. 1 & 2 in 2014 via RCA Records, which also handled the group’s latest album, PTX Presents: Top Pop, Vol. I, in April. Made up of covers (think Charlie Puth, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran and more), the album is the first in a series of PTX-curated modern pop performances, and this tour stop is just one of 39 by a three-time Grammy-winning band that has sold nearly 10 million albums worldwide. Echosmith — an Ohio-based sibling pop group working on a new album — opens the show. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa) INFO
Dreadnought w/Gullwing/Oceans Rise/Aurorae/A Place Beyond Giants When was the last time you saw a drummer also play alto and tenor sax in a doom-metal band? We haven’t either, and it only gets weirder when it comes to Denver-based doom outfit Dreadnought. Lyricist Kevin Handlon plays bass and mandolin for the band all while backing Kelly Schilling (guitar, flute plus clean and harsh vocals) and Lauren Vieira (keyboards and clean vocals) on songs from its latest album, A Wake In Sacred Waves, where heavy, swinging from gusts of black metal double bass, guttural guitar, and haunting harmonics give way to fairy-tale woodwinds, mean mandolin, and jazz saxophone. The band wants curious onlookers to imagine “Joni Mitchell guesting with Wolves in the Throne Room,” and that should be enough for you to decide if this is where you want to be on Thursday night.
