If the idea of an old-school Nokia candy bar-style phone being used as a microphone excites you, then you might want to get to know Brian Mahoney. The 29-year-old plays and composes demoscene and tech house under the Uhlectronic moniker, but he spends the rest of his hours experimenting with sound and breaking down the electronic instruments that make it possible.

“It all started when I purchased a used turntable for a DJ friend who had not played a set in over a decade,” Mahoney told CL. “I started destroying consumer electronics and toys looking for a real skill just before I finished my entrepreneurship degree at USFSP.”
He spent the next four years mostly alone, researching and developing his skill, all so he could help inspire musicians to make even more music with his homemade synths and pedals. There seems to be nothing that Mahoney won’t tear apart, and watching him mad scientist it all back together on Instagram (@uhlectronic) is a highlight of the feed. An east coast bicycle tour is on deck, but you can catch him at Kilo’s Kava and Tea Bar in Safety Harbor every Saturday night.
