Subcultural Scene

Art

You've only got about a week and a half left to check out Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture at USF's Contemporary Art Museum, and we cannot recommend this hip, eclectic, surprisingly comprehensive show enough. Featuring everything from painting and photography to video, T-shirt and skateboard graphics, graffiti and independent publishing, Beautiful Losers chronicles 30 years of the multimedia fringe art that grew out of such formerly underground American subcultures as skateboarding, hip-hop and punk rock. Several names (Andy Warhol; photographers Glen E. Friedman, Larry Clark and Craig R. Stecyk; cartoonist R. Crumb; pro skaters-turned-artists Mark Gonzales and Ed Templeton) should be instantly familiar to urban-art aficionados, though all will be surprised and knocked out by an extensive, wildly disparate collection that serves as both art show and visual history. Through Dec. 17, CAM 101, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa. Free admission. 813-974-4133.
