Today in rock history: on this date in 1974, British blues/rock guitarist and singer Eric Clapton reached the no. 1 spot on the U.S. pop singles chart with “I Shot The Sheriff” from his album 461 Ocean Boulevard. The song was penned by reggae legend Bob Marley and it originally appeared on Marley’s 1973 album with his band The Wailers, Burnin’.

Today in rock history: on this date in 1979, the rock film Quadrophenia was released. The movie was based on The Who’s 1973 masterpiece album of the same title. Starring Phil Daniels, Toyah Wilcox, Ray Winstone and The Police’s Sting, the film quickly gained a dedicated cult following and earned a firm place in Mod culture in and around England.

Today in rock history: on this date in 1983, Amy Jade Winehouse was born in Southgate, London, England. The young lady who grew up listening to jazz and soul records soon gained notoriety for her strong, commanding vocals, her musical talents and her dynamic onstage chemistry. After releasing her superb debut album Frank in 2003, Winehouse drew rave reviews from the British music press but it wasn’t until her sophomore release, 2006’s “Back To Black” that she gained worldwide fame for her larger than life persona, her bouffant hairdo and her undeniable talent for delivering passionate, heartfelt R&B influenced pop. Sadly, Winehouse passed away at age 27 in 2011 but left behind an undeniable legacy of great music and showmanship.

Today in rock history: on this date in 1984, the very first MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The event was hosted by the comedian/actor pair Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler and became a popular annual event. Jazz pioneer turned video pop star Herbie Hancock was one of the big winners that night with five of the moon man trophies being awarded to him. Other big winners included Michael Jackson, The Cars, The Police and Cyndi Lauper. Several artists performed live at the event but the most memorable of all was Madonna’s unforgettable performance of her hit “Like A Virgin” where she was fully dressed in a while lace wedding gown and writhed around on the ground all over the stage while doing so.
