Tonight in live music: Arlo Guthrie, The Temptations with The Four Tops

A few vet artists that came up in the same era with very different sounds take the lead as far as noteworthy shows go and both happen in Clearwater on this Wed., Jan. 20. Take a look at the breakdown below.

The Temptations, The Four Tops Two vocal groups that helped established the Motown Sound in the 1960s co-headline a Hump Day bill sure to get the hall moving and grooving. The Temptations are among the most successful R&B/soul groups in history with 37 Top 40 singles (most of which you likely know), while The Four Tops stand at 24 (though you’ve probably heard a lot of them, too). Each group only possesses a single member from their original lineups but continue to deliver tight vocal harmonies and well-heeled choreographed performances. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)

Arlo Guthrie
Woody Guthrie’s singing-songwriting son comes from the same folk stock, but with a countercultural slant that kicked off in 1965 with “Alice’s Restaurant” (aka "Alice's Restaurant Massacree"). Arlo’s trademark Thanksgiving Day/anti-war ode stretches past 18 minutes and is only performed during special occasions like the current 50th anniversary tour, which stopped here when it launched last January and returns on its tail end to regal us with peaceful political activism once again.
